There is the story of a man who had a recurring dream of a lion. The lion was very fierce and would chase him until he collapsed from fatigue, upon which he would awake screaming. Unsure of what this dreamt meant and desperate to make it stop, the man decided to consult his pastor for some advice.
The kindhearted pastor readily offered several logical suggestions as to what the dream could mean. Was it the man’s boss? His wife? A hidden sin in his life? A big decision to be made?
But the man grew frustrated as they discussed the possibilities. As rational as they sounded, none of these answers could fully explain the intensity of the dream. Unable to provide any other counsel to the man, the pastor decided to pray with him and ask God for wisdom and understanding.
After praying, the pastor told the man, “The next time you dream of the lion, turn around and ask him who he is, what he wants, and what is he doing in your life.” Although disappointed that this was all the pastor could do for him, the man reluctantly agreed.
That night, the lion did appear in his dream once again. The man ran for his life as he usually did, but he recalled midway what his pastor had said. Too exhausted to fight his fears, he turned around and faced the lion, asking, “Who are you?”
“Why are you running from me?” The lion replied.
“I am your courage.”
